Annual golf scramble to benefit F.I.S.H.
The community is invited to participate in the 6th Annual Golf Outing for F.I.S.H., a 9-hole scramble, this week at Alden Pines Golf Club.
Phyllis Dowd, who began the event, said over the last five years the golf outing has raised $20,000 for Fellow Islanders Sending Help (F.I.S.H.).
“To have the community support the activity is really important,” she said.
The outing will help F.I.S.H provide Christmas to Pine Island families that are in need.
Jan Egberts, who also started the tournament with Dowd, said they started the outing to raise money for F.I.S.H.
“That is our favorite charity because it stays on the island and helps people on the island,” Egberts said.
Although individuals are encouraged to register before the Dec. 7 outing, they can also do so the day of the event. Registration is $40 per person, which includes greens fees, a cart, a buffet supper and drawing.
“Please come out and play,” Egberts said. “Everyone is welcome.”
Dowd said the dinner is primarily a ham with deserts, salads and side dishes made by members of F.I.S.H. She said Publix and Winn-Dixie donated the hams for the cause.
“Really a nice dinner and again informal,” Dowd said about the atmosphere.
Robert Northey will provide music during dinner.
The tee time is 2:45 p.m. for the 9-hole scramble, which Dowd said will end around 5 p.m. when dinner begins.
Individuals can participate in the golf outing as a single, with a partner or as a team of four. Registration can be done by calling the clubhouse at 239-283-2179 or by calling Dowd at 239-283-7864.
The event will also include a drawing with such items as a basket of wines, gift certificates donated by local restaurants and a few golf clubs.
“We really appreciate the fact that merchants donate items for the drawing,” Dowd said.
The tickets for the drawing will be available at the event for $1 each.
Dowd said for each item someone brings for the Food Pantry they will receive one extra door prize ticket.
