Women donate items to American Legion Auxiliary
Two women donated an assortment of hand-made, patriotic items for the veterans, which were donated to the American Legion Auxiliary Wednesday night at the group’s monthly meeting.
Laurie Dockus, a member of the St. James City Hobby Club, said they began creating the items in July and finished at the end of September. She said they made 10 lap quilts, 10 aprons, seven cough pillows, six walker caddies, three crochet afghans, 24 bibs and three fleece throws.
Sandy Tejera, also a member of the St. James City Hobby Club, said they mostly used recycled material to make the items, which included star fabric provided by the American Legion Auxiliary.
Auxiliary President Linda Lewis said the things that were donated can be sent to their men and veterans.
“Thanks for your dedication and hard work,” she said.
As the women held up each piece that they created, the women of the auxiliary clapped and “oohed and ahhed” over what they saw.
Dockus said the club met every Wednesday for a couple of hours to work on their project.
She said she enjoyed the project because her grandson is in the Air Force and is currently stationed in Germany.
“That inspired me,” Dockus said.
Tejera, who described them as the seamstresses of the Hobby Club, said she felt very strongly about helping the veterans.
“I feel very strongly of all the soldiers and help them in anyway,” she said. “It was a pleasure doing this.”
The women of the Hobby Club are always creating something, which in the past has included items for nursery homes, Hope Hospice, as well as for the Food Pantry and the homeless.
Dockus said it all started when she saw a quilt when her mother was in a nursing home.
