‘Spirit of Calusa’ artwork donated to Calusa Land Trust
A St. Jude Harbor resident donated a piece of artwork to the Calusa Land Trust for the St. Jude Nature Trailhead vista during an unveiling ceremony Tuesday morning.
Wayne Harms, who created the metal piece of artwork for the trailhead, said he wanted to do something for the area. He moved to St. Jude Harbor in 2003.
“It’s a real nice addition of the trailhead,” he said.
The artwork, which does not have a face, symbolizes the Calusa spirit, which is why it was named “Spirit of the Calusa.”
Harms said he worked on the piece on and off for two or three months.
The St. Jude Nature Trail is approximately a one-mile round trip trail, which is located on Stabile Road off of Laratonda Road. The preserve is comprised of 365 acres, which was purchased in many steps.
Calusa Land Trust board member John Kendall said the board of directors are very appreciative of the donation because “Spirit of Calusa” coincides with the group’s mission statement to preserve and protect.
“It is supplementing our mission,” he said.
Kendall said the sculpture is located at the beginning of several hundred feet of the trailhead vista, which was purchased a couple of years ago.
