Trunk or Treat set for Sunday
The Pine Island Community Church will host the 5th Annual Trunk or Treat event, which is free of charge and open to the entire community, this weekend for all the youngsters to enjoy in the Winn-Dixie parking lot.
The Rev. Heidi Grueser of Pine Island Community Church, said they started the event five years ago because they wanted to offer something new for those who live on the island. She said the event is a safe way for kids to trick or treat that allows the whole community to come together for the cause.
Grueser said the Trunk or Treat event has been widely accepted by the community, and she believes people look forward to attending it every year. Usually 35-50 cars take part in the event, all decorating their trunks in the Halloween spirit, as well as dressing up in costume for the festivities.
“Everyone decorates their trunks,” she said.
There will also be a contest for the best decorated trunk.
“It’s funny to watch everyone out due each other with their trunks,” Grueser said.
She said there have been a lot of the same people who have participated in the past five years, as well as new participants every year.
Grueser said individuals can call her at 283-9944 for a parking spot. She said individuals begin showing up at 4 p.m. on Sunday to start decorating their trunk before the kids arrive between 5-7 p.m.
She said every year she coordinates the event with the Kiwanis Club of Greater Pine Island to offer a weekend of fun for the kids.
“We do it the next day,” Grueser said. “It’s just a great day for the kids.”
After the event, hot dogs and chips will be on sale for $2, so parents do not have to go home and cook their children dinner.
Grueser encourages the kids to dress up and come out and get candy with all of their buddies.
“It’s a lot of fun,” she said. “It really is.”
