Photo provided A Wreaths Across America wreath that will be decorated with holly leaves.

The tradition of laying wreaths to honor our veterans during the holiday season began in 1992, when the Worcester Wreath Company was stuck with a number of extra wreaths at the close of the holiday season.

Morrill Worcester remembering a boyhood trip to sacred grounds of Arlington National Cemetery donated 5,000 wreaths to be placed at the headstones of an older section of the cemetery.

What began as one man’s gesture has now grown into a national movement-when in 2006 Wreaths Across America was formed as a non-profit.

In Lee County, local organiers are trying to donate as many wreaths as possible to Sarasota National Cemetery for this event. Every Veteran, that has an honorable discharge, their spouse and dependents can be placed at Sarasota National Cemetery at no charge to their family. Please help us to tell these fine men and women that they are not forgotten.

Local organizers are asking for donations from businesses and organizations but also donations from the individuals are extremely important and the donation is tax exempt. Wreaths are $15 a piece however any donations are accepted.

Wreaths Across America has donation cans at the following places on Pine Island; Pine Island Feed & Garden Center, Carl’s Service, Dr. Watson’s. You can also send your donations to Wreaths Across America, PO Box 432, St. James City, Fl. 33956.

The local goal is to purchase 1,000 wreaths for Sarasota National Cemetery. When we purchase 100 wreaths a holly will be placed on this wreath, when the goal is reach the bow will be change from white to red.

Remember our vets, honor their families, and teach our children – by thanking a veteran.
