First Pineland anniversary parlor chat Oct. 9
The first of a series of parlor chats will take place on Tuesday to share the history of Pineland to commemorate the 110th anniversary.
Randell Research Center Director Dr. Bill Marquardt will lead the first chat in the classroom at the Calusa Heritage Trail from 10-11:30 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 9.
The discussion will include Smithson-ian archaeologist Frank Hamilton Cushing’s visit to Pineland in 1895 and 1896 to survey the remains of the Calusa town. His findings, along with a discussion of the people of Pineland and their lifestyle in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, will be the focus of the parlor chat.
The parlor chat is free for members of the Randell Research Center and the Museum of the Islands and $5 for non-members. There will be refreshments and door prizes provided.
Cindy Bear, coordinator of programs and services at the Randell Research Center, said due to the interest from the community they had to move the first parlor chat from the Ruby Gill House to the classroom to accommodate more people. In addition, she said the parking lot of the Ruby Gill House was left soggy and perilous with the recent heavy rains.
Bear encourages individuals to dress in informal, relaxed clothing for the heat due to the classroom not having air conditioning. There will be fans running during the chat.
The second parlor chat will be held on Dec. 4, from 10-11:30 a.m., at the 1924 Ruby Gill House, 7450 Pineland Road, in Pineland. The chat will address “Lonely Outpost or Settler’s Paradise?”
Gladys Schneider, a founding member of the Museum of the Islands, will lead the second chat, due to her expertise in historic architecture. The interactive chat will provide individuals with the opportunity to bring their questions, ideas and information with them.
The chat again is free for members of the Randell Research Center and the Museum of the Islands and $5 for non-members. There will be refreshments and door prizes provided.
Advanced registration is encouraged by calling 239-283-2062.
