Chrome Divas to hold poker walk in Matlacha
The Chrome Divas are holding an event at the Olde Fish House Marina next month to raise funds for the annual Bikers for Babies event.
The Bikers for Babies event, which benefits March of Dimes, will be held Sunday, Oct. 14, and will begin at the North Collier Regional Park and finish at the Fort Myers Harley Davidson.
According to the March of Dimes website, every week 81,686 babies are born in the U.S.; 10,058 babies are born premature in the U.S.; 8,361 babies are born to teen mothers (ages 1519); 6,677 babies are born low birth weight; 26,332 babies are delivered by Cesarean section and 548 babies die before their first birthday.
The mission of the March of Dimes is to help moms have full-term babies and research the problems that threaten the health of babies.
Donta Morris, who founded the Cape Coral/Fort Myers Chapter of Chrome Divas in 2004, has been raising funds for the Bikers for Babies event since the club started. She said she wanted to raise money for the cause because there have been a lot of premature births in her family.
All of the women who belong to the chapter, Morris said, have raised thousands for the event.
“Pine Island has been one of my biggest supporters,” she said. “These people rock.”
Chrome Divas have begun their efforts in raising money for the Bikers for Babies event this year, which includes Biker’s Nite at the Olde Fish House Marina on Wednesdays. They made $87 in 50/50 raffle tickets on Sept. 5 and were hoping to collect more last Wednesday.
To continue the fund-raising efforts, Morris said they are holding a poker walk through beautiful downtown Matlacha on Oct. 7 from 1-3 p.m. Registration for the walk is $5. The event will also include a fish fry for $6, live music and biker games, which will include a bucket bike show where you vote for your favorite bike with dollar bills.
“All proceeds from the benefit will go towards the March of Dimes to help the babies,” Morris said.
A helmet drive will also be held on Oct. 13 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Morris said they will be standing at the four-way stop collecting donations for the cause, as well as at Veterans Parkway and Santa Barbara Boulevard in Cape Coral.
Last year the Cape Coral/Fort Myers chapter of Chrome Divas came in third place with the most money raised for March of Dimes. In years past, Morris was the leader of raising the most money for the organization.
