The 4th annual Matlacha Redfish Challenge will take place at the Olde Fish House Marina next month to benefit Fellow Islanders Sending Help (F.I.S.H.).

Tournament director Jason Snyder said over the last three years the event has raised more than $21,000 from the tournament that was used to assist a local firefighter with cancer, assist area firefighters in need and to help F.I.S.H. with their expenses.

The annual Matlacha Redfish Challenge will kick off with a captain’s meeting on Friday, Sept. 7, at 6 p.m., at the Olde Fish House Marina, which will include live music. The tournament will take place the next day, Saturday, Sept 8, from 7 a.m. until 4 p.m., with the live weigh-in from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

There will be live music from 2 p.m. until close at the Olde Fish House Marina during the tournament.

The registration fee for the event is $250 per team.

Snyder said anglers can register at the Olde Fish House Marina, D&D Bait & Tackle, Center Bait and Tackle, Monroe Canal Marina, Cape Tool and Tackle, Captain Rob’s Bait and Tackle or by visiting the website www.wastedseamen.com.

He said anglers can also register the night of the captain’s meeting.

The combined weight of two redfish will determine the winners of the tournament. The first place prize is $1,500, second place is $1,000, third place is $500 and fourth place is $250. If more than 25 boats register for the event, anglers can add $50 per place, per boat for first through fourth place.

Snyder said they are still seeking donations for the raffle and silent auction. Those interested in donating an item can call Snyder at 239-349-1129, teamwastedseamen@yahoo.com or drop off the donation at the Olde Fish House Marina.
