Meo creates logo for Matlacha Bridge Reef Project

A logo, courtesy of artist Mel Meo, was created for the Matlacha Bridge Reef Project, a non-profit organization that was created to save a portion of the old bridge.
“I thought it was a worthwhile cause,” Meo said. “It should be turned into a reef and not turned into landfill or whatever they do with them.”
The Matlacha Bridge Reef Project was formed in July by Rod Mazzoli of Island Floors Inc. & Interiors because he wanted to save some of the old Matlacha bridge from being demolished and turn it into an artificial reef to keep the legacy alive.
The ideas of the logo came from a bridge painting Meo did for Times of the Islands magazine. She said the logo incorporates the idea of cinder blocks crumbling at the end and turning into a reef, which attracts fish. A guy in a boat fishing is also incorporated in the picture.
Although one site has been secured for a portion of the Matlacha Bridge to become an artificial reef, money needs to be raised to make it become a reality. That location is on the Novac Reef, which is located at the northern pass of Gasparilla Island.
The first fund-raiser for the Matlacha Bridge Reef Project will be held from 3-6 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 22, at the Olde Fish House Marina in Matlacha.
Tickets for the event are $10, which includes a silent auction, seafood raffle, 50/50 raffle and fish fry. Those interested in purchasing tickets can call 239-283-6070.
Volunteers, sponsors and items for the silent auction are still being sought for the event.
One hundred percent of the profits made on Sept. 22 will go towards the project.
Donations for the cause can be sent to Matlacha Bridge Reef Project, 5261 N.W. Pine Island Road, Bokeelia, FL 33922.
