MEGHAN McCOY Robin Parmerlee, assistant vice president and Capital Bank branch manager, cooked hot dogs at the bank Wednesday afternoon to show appreciation for those who donated to the Matlacha Hookers School Drive Fundraiser.

The smell of hot dogs cooking on the grill permeated Capital Bank Wednesday afternoon as the bank said thank you to those who donated supplies to the Matlacha Hookers School Drive Fundraiser.

The school supply drive ended Aug. 2.

Robin Parmerlee, assistant vice president and Capital Bank branch manager, said they went through 70 hot dogs by 12:45 p.m., an hour and 45 minutes after they starting serving lunch.

Individuals were treated to hot dogs, chips, cookies and drinks from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“It is a nice trade off,” Parmerlee said of offering lunch to those who donated. “We are trying to help the Hookers.”

Although they have always had a bin at the Capital Bank location off of Stringfellow Road for the fund-raiser, this is the first year they offered lunch.

“We want to make sure the kids have everything they need and the teachers don’t have to worry,” she said of why they have a bin at the bank.

Parmerlee said she hopes they can continue to offer lunch in the future.

Full-time residents since 1993, Shirley and Albert VanderLaan stopped by the bank Wednesday afternoon to enjoy some lunch courtesy of Capital Bank.

“It is a nice idea and very good,” Shirley said. “We really enjoy this bank, everyone of the girls are very nice.”

Albert said he likes what the Matlacha Hookers do for the community.

“I have some favorite charities on the island and they are one of them,” he said.
