Hookers extend deadline for back-to-school supplies drive

3 min read

The deadline is nearing for the Matlacha Hookers School Drive Fund-raiser for the youngsters going back to class on Aug. 8.

Karen McKee, a Matlacha Hooker member, said they are currently doing fair with the fund-raiser because a lot of businesses have been unable to get supplies into the boxes.

“We really need supplies, we hope the community comes out,” she said. “We are trying to help those who really need help, school supplies are not cheap.”

To help increase the donations for the school drive, individuals that drop off supplies at Capital Bank will, in turn, receive free food and a beverage on Aug. 1, from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m., courtesy of the bank.

Due to the Back to School Celebration taking place at Capital Bank, the deadline to drop off school supplies has been extended until Aug. 2.

The fund-raiser has been held for at least the last 10 years for students at Pine Island Elementary School. McKee said during the good times they were able to donate 20-25 tubs of school supplies to the school. Last year she believes they donated four or five tubs of supplies to the school.

McKee said individuals this year are also providing monetary donations for the fund-raiser, which has amounted to a few hundred dollars.

“We will decide what is needed and run out and buy it,” she said.

Those who want to make a monetary donation can call McKee at 239-218-2123 or Cindee Tolliver at 239-283-4040.
