Parsons family

David Parsons had been a shrimper here on Pine Island since 1989, when he first moved here. He worked hard to support his wife of 14 years, Bonnie, and their three children, but there wasn’t always a lot left over after paying rent, buying food and clothing and paying bills.

“We didn’t have anything saved up,” said Bonnie Parsons. “That’s one reason the accident was so devastating.”

The accident she talks about in a subdued voice was the Oct. 15 traffic accident in which the Parsons’ son, Trey, was fatally injured and his father critically injured.

“David had 9 broken ribs, a broken arm, damage to a kidney and his heart, and multiple contusions caused by broken glass,” she said. “I’m literally still picking tiny pieces of glass out of his face.”

The automobile insurance fortunately included some medical coverage, she noted, but David was told it would be up to six months before he could return to work, which was a financial blow to the family.

“I was totally shocked when I learned that Jim Frock was organizing a benefit for our family,” Bonnie said. “It goes to show how much Pine Island cares about Pine Islanders.”

The couple says the level of support they have received is making a tremendous difference.

“Basically we are getting by one day at a time,” they said.

Their daughter, Cassidy, was closest to the brother the family lost.

“Cassie and Trey did everything together so she was hit harder but is getting lots of support at school from her friends and teachers,” Bonnie said. “Our other son, AJ, is autistic so he looks at things from a different perspective. One day he will be crying and the next it is as if nothing has changed for him.”

“The Parsons are a good, solid family,” said Peg Harmon of Pine Island F.I.S.H. “We have been able to help them with some rent money and will be sure they have some Christmas gifts for the kids, but we have so many families in need. I know how much this benefit will help them.”

One thing the family would feel more comfortable having is a long-term rental.

“We are in a home now that is for sale, so we have only a month to month lease,” Bonnie said. “And although the rent is probably fair, it’s steep for us right now.”
