Baker Buddies’ Bash set for Nov. 7 at Miceli’s Restaurant
Miceli’s Restaurant, 3930 Pine Island Rd., Matlacha, will host the third annual Baker Buddies’ Bash Fund Raising Event on Nov. 7 between 6 and 9 p.m. During that time, Miceli’s will donate 20 percent of its proceeds. Strange Arrangement will provide the entertainment
According to Theresa Morosco, Life Skills teacher and Baker Buddies advisor, Buddies is a partnership between “typical developing” general education students at Ida Baker High School and students with intellectual disabilities in the Life Skills program.
“This event is not just a fund raiser,” Morosco said. “It is really a celebration of the club.”
Morosco had the idea for the club and was able to act on it when a senior at Ida Baker approached her three years ago. Each senior must take part in a project, and that student chose to work with the Life Skills students. This year, between 30 and 40 general education students will be in the club along with the 14 in Morosco’s class. Baker Staffing Specialist Jennifer Mackler is Morosco’s co-chair. Morosco also has a senior advisor and a junior advisor along with two sets of officers in the club.
“Each year I am overwhelmed at how widely the general education students participate,” Morosco said.
The funds raised will help to defray expenses for on and off campus activities such as movies, holiday parties, and crafts.
The goal of the club is to promote social awareness and acceptance of all types of people, with all types of disabilities. Morosco said her Life Skills students can go into any classroom in the school and have friends. During the event, Morosco expects that some students in both categories will speak about how much the club has meant to them.
