The Second Annual Bert’s Redfish Challenge will be held Saturday, Sept. 10, at Bert’s Bar and Grill in Matlacha.
Teams of up to four anglers per boat will compete to land the two largest legal redfish.
“Last year’s two winning fish totaled 12.75 pounds,” said spokesman Jason Snyder.
First place wins $1,200, sponsored by D&D Bait and Tackle; second place wins $800, sponsored by Abate Pest Control; third place wins $500, sponsored by Plumbing Solutions of SW FL; and fourth place wins a free entry for next year’s tournament sponsored by Island Cast Nets.
The fishing begins at 7 a.m. with weigh-in beginning at 11 a.m. Final weigh-in is at 3:30 p.m.
“We will have a captains’ meeting at Bert’s at 6 p.m. on Friday to review the rules. One angler from each boat must be there for the meeting,” said Snyder. “Anglers can register on our website, www.bertsredfishchallenge.com or at the captains’ meeting. The entry fee is $200 per boat.”
Beginning at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Bert’s will have a fish fry for anglers along with music by Gary and Keri. Later at 5 p.m., the challenge winners will be announced, there will be a cast net raffle, a silent auction, 50/50 and Deb and the Dynamics will entertain that evening.
One hundred percent of proceeds from the event will benefit Pine Island F.I.S.H., an organization that assists locals with essential needs, and the Southwest Florida Firefighters and Paramedics IAFF Local 1826 Members’ Assistance Fund which assists firefighters and paramedics in need.
