Registration continues for 11th annual Labor Day Golf Scramble

The 11th annual Labor Day Golf Scramble organized by Jan Green and Butch Waring still has some open spots for golfers. The twosome is also accepting donations of door prize items.

The tournament will be held at the Alden Pines Country Club.

According to Green, the proceeds of the golf tournament for several years went toward scholarships in honor of the late Steve Dunlap. When those scholarships were discontinued, she and Waring decided to keep holding their event so long as the money stayed on Pine Island.

“Now the winning team gets to choose which charity will get the money,’ she said.

Last year’s recipient was the Food Pantry. The year before it was the Beacon of Hope. One year, the money raised went to pay medical bills for a Pine Island resident. In the 11 years of its existence, the tournament has raised $15,000.

Golfers may register on Monday, Sept. 5, at Alden Pines for $30. They should plan to arrive before 8 a.m. for a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.

During the day, eight special events, four for men and four for women, such as longest drive will occur. First and second place teams win prizes. For third and fourth place, teams are drawn.

“That means even if you’re not a very good golfer, you still might win,” Green said.
