Free summer lunch program for kids was a big success

The second year for the free summer lunch program for kids “Food That’s In When School Is Out” was a heartwarming success.
Over 1,030 lunches were served to Pine Islanders under the age of 18 over the six week program. Lunch sites this year were expanded to include the Pine Island Pool, Elementary School, and the fellowship hall of the Church of God in Bokeelia. Free lunches were delivered and served from noon to 1 p.m. daily by a dedicated group of volunteers.
In addition to a nutritious lunch served every weekday, many days featured special “treat days” sponsored by some our our adult islanders. Hand-cranked Ice Cream Day, Squirtgun Fridays, Popsicle Day, Brownies a la mode and Tattoo Tuesday were just some of the extras provided by generous supporters.
Many thanks to Program Coordinators Katie Fischer and Susan McGuire, and special appreciation to Diane Greer who faithfully prepared each and every lunch every day. Our dedicated volunteers: Barbara Howard, L.A. Akers, Cathy Frahm, Ranee Despress, Mary Margaret, Shirley Stewart, Cathy Gaffney, Kathryn Pruett, Mackenzie Honc, Lilli Honc, Danielle Snell, Deborah Ianucci, Courtney Frahm, Andy Fischer, Carol Schnell, Elizabeth McGuire, Amy McGuire, and Clancy Riehm.
