Calvetti Tile & Marble, a family affair
It’s not often that a downturn in the economy makes business owners happy. But in the case of Mark and Tonya Calvetti, owners of Calvetti Tile & Marble, Inc., it ultimately did.
Established in 1999 during the building heyday, Mark and Tonya were running 10 trucks and crews all over Southwest Florida from their Fort Myers office.
“Then new construction went kaput,” said Mark. “We saw the handwriting on the wall, sold eight of the trucks and then decided to open a showroom and office out here on Pine Island in May of 2010. We live out here, are raising our family out here, so this has simplified our lives immensely.”
Mark began setting tile as a teen when he worked part time with his brother-in-law exclusively on the barrier islands. He has passed the trade along to the Calvetts’ sons, Mark Jr. and Connor. “We’re truly a family business – our sons work with us and our other employees are all on our payroll. We do not subcontract out our work,” Mark explained. “That’s why the compliments and word-of-mouth business we get are so gratifying.”
Calvetti Tile & Marble specializes in remodeling but it doesn’t just offer tile and marble flooring. “You can come to us for carpet, wood or laminate flooring, kitchen countertops and back splashes,” Tonya said. “We also do lanais and pool areas, including custom water features and wonderful medallions on floors or walls. Those are popular out on the islands which is where a lot of our work comes from.”
Tonya provides the company’s design services. “Most homeowners think having a real custom look means a lot of expense,” she said. “After I visit their home and sit down with them and we come up with a design they love, they are surprised to find it is well within their budget. Estimates are always free and I bring along samples to help visualize what can be done.”
Calvetti Tile & Marble has many brands of tile from which to choose including Alpha Tile, Florida, Happy Floors and Mohawk, which also makes carpet. “There is even a tile that looks like wood,” said Mark, showing a sample.
Mark and Tonya don’t expect the construction business to boom again anytime soon, but that’s fine with them.
“We love the island and now we are enjoying it and our family more,” Mark said.
