Firefighters battle brush fire in Bokeelia

Members of the Matlacha-Pine Island Fire department battled a 125-acre brush fire in the vicinity of Harbor Drive in Bokeelia Wednesday.

As of 8 p.m., MPI firefighters and a Strike Team from Lee County EOC had the fire 30 percent contained. Also of 8 p.m. several homes remained threatened by the blaze with one suffering what officials called superficial damage.

According to J.A. Stakenburg Chief of Operations with EOC, two minor injuries were sustained as a result of the fire.

One firefighter was treated at the scene for heat exhaustion and a resident suffered from a respiratory issue but declined medical transport to a local hospital.

Currently, the cause of the fire is unknown.
