MARIANNE PATON Hundreds of spectators gathered along the Monroe Canal last weekend in St. James CIty to root on their webbed footed friends during this year’s Rubber Duck Race.

This year’s Rubber Duck Race was sold out again long before the starting quack was sounded during Saturday’s race.

Ticket holders hoped to take home one of 40 prizes to be awarded to the speediest of duckies. Staged at Woody’s Waterside in St. James City, 3,000 rubber ducks were released into the Monroe Canal to be sent paddling their way to the finish line. The duck to cross the finish line first was #2248, which earned the holder of the winning ticket, John Petty, a full day of fishing aboard the Mis Max with Captain Steve Woodard. This year, the duck race netted more than $3,000 and all proceeds will benefit the Calusa Land Trust on Pine Island.
