A new venue and perfect weather contributed to the success of the 20th annual Mullet Toss this past weekend.

“We couldn’t have asked for better weather for this year’s event and the new venue was very well received by those who attended,” said Matlacha Mariner president, Paul Fila. I think these are just two of the reasons we had such a great turnout this year. The park in Matlacha offered lots of elbow room and great parking and also allowed us to add a few vendors. All in all, the response by those who manned booths and those who came to participate or watch the event were very pleased and we plan to stage the Mullet Toss in the Matlacha Community Park next year.”

As in years past. Mullet tossers ranged in age from 2 to 72 and, win or lose, according to Fila, all had a good time.

Taking the top honors in this year’s event for the second consecutive year was Richard Bortz of Cape Coral. Finishing first in the women’s division was Patricia Gagnon and, also a two- time winner in the senior divisions, was Matlacha Mariner, Bill McKee.

Proceeds from the annual Mullet Toss will benefit several Pine Island non-profit charitable organizations including the Pine Island Food Pantry, the Beacon of HOPE and summer camps for children held at the Matlacha Community Park.
