Randy King Last week a group of 15 novice artists gathered at St. James Civic Center to learn from area artist, Joan Roberts. Shown with their finished paintings are Sandy Sacco, Susan Corbin, Marie Morrison, instructor Joan Roberts, Mary Halbleib, Joanne Griffin, Therese Donohue, Michelle Randall and her daughters Katri and Sophie Randall and Linda Selleck.

Pineapples, painted in dazzling colors, appeared on each canvas in a painting workshop instructed by Joan Roberts at SJCCA. Sponsored by members of SJCCA’s Order of the Golden Brush, those attending enjoyed last Tuesday afternoon exploring their painterly style with big brushes in oil and acrylic.

Roberts, cover artist for “A guide to the Arts on Pine Island” and well known for her romantic and graceful images, is a member of the Cape Coral Art League, Bonita Art League and Alliance of Ft. Myers.

Her work is featured in island galleries.

“Joan has a great teaching style. She gave everyone individual attention and found something good in every picture,” said Marie Morrison.

Susan Arnold commented, “Our pineapple paintings were fun and looked so good you could eat them.”

“Joan led us gently through the process of creating our own painting.

Very comfortable and I learned a lot,” said Susan Corwin.

“Very talented teacher,” added Therese Donohue, visiting from Massachusetts.

Sandy Sacco, known for her own painted flower pots, said, ” Joan took the time to help each attendee and make suggestions.”

“We are excited that our first 2 workshops, featuring known artists, have met our intent to inspire and to celebrate the creative spirit in all who attend. In fact, because of interest, Joan Roberts will be leading a second session on April 5, from 1 to 4 p.m. at SJCCA, according to Linda Selleck, painting group member and workshop organizer. Already looking forward to next season, Selleck added, “With the positive response of participants, we are planning more be creative workshops, starting in November with watercolorist, Pat Johnson.

The Order of the Golden Brush, a long-time painting group at St. James City Civic Association building meets year round on the corner of Fourth Avenue and Lemon Street in St. James City each Tuesday morning, beginning at 10 a.m. All are welcome to attend.
