Lions Club announces annual ‘mock’ elections fund raiser
Contrary to rumors you may or may not have heard, beginning Jan. 5 and running until Feb. 5, the Greater Pine Island Lions Club’s annual fund raiser will keep the island buzzing with activity.
Our candidates will be energized and running around the island, and off, searching for donations of items from our generous businesses and private donors for raffles, auctions or prizes. Some of the candidates will be holding raffles, car washes, cake walks, bake sales, grab bags, guessing games, 50/50s and numerous other activities. The voting stations, sponsors of candidates, will offer $.25 beer the day of the election, Feb. 5, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. As all of you who have benefited from the GPI Lions Club charity this past year, we are surviving, but starving.
The Greater Pine Island Lions Club is just like every other non-profit on the island, short of money. We have been on the island since 1969, 41 years. This needs to be an extra special year in order to keep providing glasses for our children and disadvantaged who cannot afford them, as well as aid other organizations on the island providing help that we are not able to provide, but also for the club to continue to operate. All money raised goes to charity. We limit our giving to those who live on the island. In 2010 we had to cut our budget and will probably have to continue that for 2011. We are asking that the community businesses please help our candidates in this election. The winner is based solely on the amount of money they turn in after close of the election day, 5 p.m., on Feb. 5. So, won’t you help our candidates, donate as much as you possibly can and participate. Get out to the voting stations for the activities the candidates are hosting and help the Greater Pine Island Lions Club survive.
The club also needs members to help up provide our services, but also to help raise money. Lions are people just like you who want to help our community survive this terrible time we are going through.
