Hurricane Julia advisory for 5 a.m. Sept. 17

At 5 a.m. AST, Julia was moving toward the west-northwest near 25 MPH. A turn toward the northwest with a decrease in forward speed is expected on Saturday, followed by a turn toward the north on Sunday.

Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 85 MPH with higher gusts. Julia is a category one hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson hurricane wind scale. Weakening is anticipated later today and Saturday.

Hurricane force winds extend outward up to 35 miles from the center and tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 115 miles.
