Hurricane Igor advisory for 5 a.m. Sept. 16

At 5 a.m. AST, Igor was moving toward the west-northwest near 7 MPH. A turn toward the northwest and an increase in forward speed are expected over the next couple of days.

Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 145 MPH with higher gusts. Igor is an extremely dangerous category four hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson hurricane wind scale. Fluctuations in strength are likely during the next couple of days, but Igor is expected to remain a large and powerful hurricane.

Igor is a large tropical cyclone. Hurricane force winds extend outward up to 70 miles from the center and tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 273 miles.
