Making a change in Matlacha
Special to The Eagle
As you drive up Pine Island Road in Matlacha, the smiling woman you see ringing a Salvation Army bell in front of Lovegrove Gallery and Gardens is Margaret Silberg. The only ringer in Matlacha, Silberg has volunteered for this duty every year since she became an adult.
Silberg has never forgotten the year in her childhood when she and her brothers and sisters were introduced to the Salvation Army. With no way to provide Christmas gifts for their children, Silberg’s parents reluctantly turned to the Salvation Army.
Young Margaret’s gift that year was a paint set, a fitting present for the woman who is now the mother-in-law of artist, Leoma Lovegrove.
