On Friday, Jan. 1, 2010, the Traffic Unit will target at least one of the following three locations for enforcement:
1. Pondella Road, North Fort Myers
2. Palm Beach Boulevard (State Road 78), Fort Myers
3. Crystal Drive, Fort Myers
Locations are selected based upon high incidents of crashes, traffic surveys and citizen complaints. The Sheriff’s Office is committed to promoting traffic safety and enforcing the law. By focusing on violations such as red light running, speeding, DUI and others, motorists become more alert and are encouraged to obey traffic laws. Note: The “Move Over Act” requires motorists on multi-lane highways provide an empty lane between them and emergency vehicles parked and displaying visual signals. The law also requires you to slow to 20 mph below the posted speed limit. If the limit is 20 mph or less the motorist must drop to a speed of 5 miles per hour. Move over, slow down and keep your emergency workers safe!

Note: Yield signs are a traffic control device located where lanes of traffic converge and are intended to provide motorists in one of the lanes to have the right-of-way to proceed safely. A common mistake by drivers is to speed up and merge with the traffic that has the right of way, instead of coming to a stop and allowing those with the right-of-way to pass. If the yield sign is in your lane, approach the intersection with caution and be prepared to stop.
