Marianne PatON Members of the Knights of Columbus, George Hoit and Grand Knight Peter McKeowin, recently presented a check for $1,337.95 to ESE Department head Nancy Bishop and Pine Island Elementary School principal Rob Mazzoli.

During a recent three-day fund-raiser, the Knights of Columbus from Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Catholic Church in Bokeelia raised a substantial amount of money through the sale of Tootsie Rolls. Each year, members of the KOC stand at the entrance of several area businesses to trade little chocolate treats for donations. This year at total of $1,337.95 was raised to benefit programs at Pine Island Elementary School.

“Donations of this kind are always very much appreciated,” said PIE Principal Rob Mazzoli. “The support we receive from organizations like the Knights of Columbus and the rest of the community are what the island is all about. We appreciate the support this community so generously shows for the school.”

According to Mazzoli, the money donated by the KOC will help to purchase materials including books and computer software for the ESE department.

“The software we are planning to purchase will be curriculum based with a lot of supplemental programs to help the kids,” Mazzoli said.

The Knights of Columbus on Pine Island meet at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Catholic Church the first Thursday of each month beginning at 7:30 p.m.
