One Hole Golf Outing to take place this weekend

3 min read

From pros to ameteures, all are invited to participate in this year’s One Hole, Over the Pond Golf Outing. This day-long event will take place Saturday, Feb. 21, at the American Legion in St. James City. Golfers can tee off beginning at 8 a.m. to attempt a hole in one across the pond at the legion.

The cost to participate in this fun-filled event is just $5 per entry and will put players in the running for a special prize. The golfer who is able to land his or her ball closest to the hole will win the day’s event. The entry fee also includes the use of clubs, golf balls, carts and a caddy and all proceeds are earmarked for veterans who reside on Pine Island.

Also beginning at 8 a.m., those visiting the legion can enjoy a continental breakfast from 8-11:30 a.m. followed by a barbecue with hamburgers and hot dogs complete with all of the fixings from 11:30 a.m. and continuing throughout the day.

Later in the afternoon, the fun will continue as music will be provided by The Last Resort which will take the stage at the legion from noon until 2 p.m. followed by the Skunk Monkeys who will perform from 2 to 6 p.m.

Lending his expertise to the players will be legion resident golf pro Tom Ruscik, who will provide a few tips on negotiating the water hazard that has proven to be a challenge for even the experienced golfers.

“I would suggest that anyone who has a favorite club to use it during this event. The one important thing to remember is to leave your good balls at home because there is a good chance you could give them up to the pond,” said Ruscik. “This was a great event and last year we had over 100 participants and we hope that anyone who wants to play joins us on Feb. 21 and just have fun. This is not restricted to just members of the legion and we welcome anyone who wants to play that day.”

According to Ruscik, nearly anything goes with regard to this competition.

“We absolutely allow heckling of the other players and they can do just about anything to distract the others but are not allowed to touch the person who is attempting a shot at the hole,” he said.

Ruscik will be on the tee box from 8 to 11 a.m. and will be followed by other pros to offer advice and tips to any of the contestants competing in this event.

The outing is a one hole course and the goal is to chip the ball over the pond and the winner will be the golfer who is able to land closest to the hole.

This event is open to the public. For more information about the One Hole Golf Outing, call the American Legion at 283-4434.
