A chance to save on gas and donate to a good cause
With gas prices fluctuating, many islanders are seeking less fuel consuming vehicles to travel around their neighborhoods, and for a $10 donation, From Our Hearts will provide the perfect solution. As part of its fund-raising efforts to support Partners in Breast Cancer Care, over the coming weeks members of the organization will be selling raffle tickets for a special scooter.
Raffle tickets can be purchased by e-mailing to wecare@fromourheart.org or during the Breast Fest event on March 14. The two-passenger Wildfire 49cc Scooter is considered street legal and comes with the optional trunk. This electric start scooter has a CVT transmission and is valued at more than $1,000.
The raffle for the scooter will be drawn during the 8th annual Pine Island Breast Cancer Benefit better known as Breast Fest. This event will begin with a 5K (3-mile) and a one-mile walk through the neighborhoods in St. James City. The walks will begin with registration for individuals and teams at 7:30 a.m., and will commence at 8:30 a.m. Prizes will be awarded to the walkers in several different categories.
While walking the pre-designated route, walkers will enjoy live music, water and if a ride is needed for any tired walkers, they need only flag down one of the golf carts which will cruise the route for a ride to the finish line at the St. James City Civic Association building.
Then, after the race, all are invited to St. James City Civic to enjoy live music provided throughout the afternoon by several local musicians. Vendors of several kinds also will be on hand during the event with food from local restaurants, beverages and official Breast Fest 09 T-shirts.
In addition, the event will feature a silent auction and other raffle items as well. Winning tickets for these prizes will be drawn throughout the day. There also will be plenty of activities to occupy the children as well. During Breast Fest, the kids can have their faces painted and participate in a jelly bean counting contest, numerous games and much more.
In years past, Breast Fest continued until 10 p.m., however, this year the festivities will come to a close at 6 p.m. so those wishing to attend should plan to do so early.
All proceeds from the scooter raffle as well as Breast Fest will benefit Partners in Breast Cancer Care through the Lee Memorial From Our Hearts Fund for patients in need of chemotherapy, radiation and advanced medications in the Pine Island area. Caring for people within the From Our Hearts ZIP code area, Partners in Breast Cancer Care has provided services to hundreds of island area residents who could otherwise not afford it. From April through August 2008, funds donated by From Our Hearts has provided 113 mammograms, 35 ultrasounds, three biopsies, three mastectomies and 69 other breast cancer related services.
