Moose Bicycle Poker Run set for this Saturday
It’s time once again to tighten those spokes and oil those chains to participate in the annual Pine Island Moose Bicycle Poker Run. Players can participate in this event from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24.
As in years past, the cost to participate will be $5 per hand and players can play as many hands as they choose. Cash prizes will be awarded to the three highest hands with half of the proceeds for the winners and the other half benefiting the Moose scholarship fund.
The poker run will have seven designated stops along Stringfellow Road in St. James City, including Woody’s Waterside Restaurant, the Ragged Ass Saloon, Big Curve North at Tropical Point, the American Legion Post 136, the KOA Campground driveway entrance, the VFW Post 4353 and the final stop at the Moose Lodge. At each of the locations, poker run participants will select a card to develop a seven-card hand, and all players must be at the Moose Lodge no later than 3 p.m. to turn in their hands in order to qualify for a prize.
The run can be done in any order the player chooses as long as the last card drawn is at the Pine Island Moose Lodge. This run also may be done on foot, by car, motorcycle or any other mode of transportation in addition to bicycling.
The proceeds have enabled the Moose Lodge members to present $1,000 scholarships to dozens of deserving Pine Island students who have gone on to seek a higher education after graduating high school.
While the winning hands are being tallied, those participating in the run, as well as spectators, can enjoy an afternoon of food, music and other activities at the lodge from 1:30 to 5 p.m.
Musical entertainment will begin at 1:30 p.m. and continue until 5 p.m. Taking the stage will be island favorite Lonnie Hendrix, who will share the spotlight with Bob Smith and several other local musicians making guest appearances throughout the afternoon.
All attending the event at the Moose also can enjoy the wealth of food that will be prepared by lodge members on the premises. An abundance of food items are planned for the day at a reasonable cost. Proceeds from food sales also will benefit the Moose scholarships, which will be awarded to island students later this year.
Tickets for the Moose Bicycle Poker Run can be purchased at the Pine Island Moose located at 8903 Stringfellow Rd., in St. James City, or by calling Ron at 283-4245.
