The Lee County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Unit is providing the information listed below in continuing efforts to increase traffic safety awareness and education, plus to emphasize the importance of obeying traffic laws to reduce traffic crashes, injuries and death on Lee County roads.
Monday, Feb. 2, 2009, the Traffic Unit will target at least one of the following three locations for enforcement:
1. Leeland Heights Boulevard, Lehigh Acres
2. West Terry Street, Bonita Springs
3. Summerlin Road, Fort Myers
Locations are selected based upon high incidents of crashes, traffic surveys and citizen complaints. The Sheriff’s Office is committed to promoting traffic safety and enforcing the law. By focusing on violations such as red light running, speeding, DUI and others, motorists become more alert and are encouraged to obey traffic laws. The Sheriff’s Office Traffic Unit and District Patrol Deputies enforce our traffic laws each day by issuing citations and warnings.
Preliminary results from their cumulative activity yesterday are as follows:
Citations Issued: 92
Written Warnings Issued: 146

Note: Traffic Safety Tip of the Week: PATIENCE – This one word, if put into practice, can prevent a traffic crash. A driver who gets in a rush or lacks patience becomes what is known as the “aggressive driver”. The patient motorist allows extra time to reach their destination, uses their turn signals, doesn’t tailgate, speed or run red lights – an excellent example of safe driving.

Note: The “Move Over Act” requires motorists on multi-lane highways provide an empty lane between them and emergency vehicles parked and displaying visual signals. The law also requires you to slow to 20 mph below the posted speed limit. If the limit is 20 mph or less the motorist must drop to a speed of 5 miles per hour. Move over, slow down and keep your emergency workers safe!

Note: A sobriety checkpoint over the weekend resulted in several arrests. Various initiatives continue daily and are a part of our ongoing commitment to remove impaired drivers from our roadways and promote awareness including participation in nationwide crackdowns such as “Drunk Driving — Over the Limit, Under Arrest.” If you observe a drunk driver in Lee County you are encouraged to dial 9-1-1 and report them.

Signs, pavement markings and signal lights are considered traffic control devices and to ignore them places you and other motorists at risk.
