Last week the Pine Island Kiwanis received a $500 donation from Dr. Markus Sherry of Riverdale Dental Associates to rebuild the new Kiwanis Park.

“With this $500 we’ve raised more than $20,000 of the $45,000 goal,” organizer Cindy Bickford said. “The Pine Island Kiwanis has taken this on and the Pine Island community has helped us so much. We’re hoping for a substantial donation from the state Kiwanis in a week or two.”

The park, located on the grounds of the St. James City Civic Association, has been known as the Lions Club Park for 20 years. When the Pine Island Lions Club disbanded last year the park fell into disrepair.

Bickford, who lives near the playground and has grandchildren that frequently use the facilities, spearheaded the effort to save the playground.

To contribute to the fund, go to the Go Fund Me page at www.gofundme.com/f/kiwanis-park.

“The property has been graded and we will be ordering some of the new equipment very soon,” Bickford said.
