An oncology esthetician will visit the island Jan. 26 to provide skin care treatments for patients who are going through cancer treatments for a nominal fee at Spa 33 in Matlacha.

Sharon Bell, a resident of Port St. Lucie, recently completed her certification in oncology esthetics and is an educator with the International Dermal Institute. She was a social worker for 19 years, before she become involved in skin care almost seven years ago.

“I love caring for people’s skin, it is our largest organ and it has so many protective capabilities,” Bell said.

She wanted to provide skin care treatments for patients who are going through cancer treatment because she was personally affected by the disease due to her father having cancer.

“I was touched by cancer,” Bell said. “I wanted to give something back, this is not about the money, (it’s about) a passion for skin and a compassion for people in need.”

One Saturday a month, an hour session will be provided to those who want to take advantage of Bell’s services at Spa 33.

“We are going to start off with one weekend a month to deliver some treatments,” Bell said.

Spa 33 owner Nadine Southall said the services will include a one-hour facial specific to an individuals needs, as well as customized education for each person. The service, which is $10 a person, will use Dermalogica products, which is formulated for individuals with sensitive skin.

Southall said Bell will educate individual about what changes will occur with treatment and how they can treat those skin changes.

She said the treatments are important because skin changes during cancer treatments.

“There are so many things we can do to help the skin,” Bell said, adding that the facial will also make them feel better and help them relax.

The facial that Bell is offering will help heal the skin, as well as hydrate the skin if treatments have not begun yet. She said if facials are done before treatments are started their skin will not be affected as badly.

Bell said Spa 33 is a great location to provide the facials because it will provide some individual care in a non-clinical setting.

“It really provides them with a nice environment to relax during a stressful time for them,” Bell said.

Southall said they will also provide a discounted rate to any caretaker of a cancer patient, as well as nurses of the oncology field.

Those interested in the services are asked to call Spa 33 at 239-558-8217 to schedule an appointment. Spa 33 is located at 4547 Pine Island Road in Matlacha.
