Legion Auxiliary Unit 136 accepting Girls State applications
The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 136 is currently accepting applications for Girls State 2013, which will be held at Florida State University in June.
Young women who are juniors in high school can apply for Girls State. The Auxiliary will pay all expenses for those selected.
This year’s Girls State will be held from June 13-21. All applications for the program must be turned in by Friday, Feb. 8.
Sonny Koutsoutis said to be eligible, the girls must be residents of the state of Florida, be willing to salute the flag and take the oath of office on a Bible. In addition, all applicants must be juniors in high school and return next year as seniors. She said an interest in government is a requirement, as well as qualities of leadership, trust, honesty, community service and good academic standing.
Students who wish to attend Girls State should contact their guidance counselor at school or Koutsoutis at 239-283-4980.
She said the unit’s Girls State Committee will then contact each candidate for an interview prior to making its selection.
The American Legion Auxiliary has sponsored juniors for the Girls State program since 1991. It was originally established in 1937, to provide students with the chance to live together for one week as self-governing citizens, enjoying the governmental and political experiences of a democracy.
