Matlacha Mariners makes pair of $400 donations
The Matlacha Mariners made two $400 donations recently – one to help an organization and the other to help a Pine Island family.
Ross Stornello, a Matlacha Mariner, said donating money is what the organization does, so it can benefit the Pine Island community.
“Whether it be through direct donations through charitable organizations like the Food Pantry or FISH, or helping citizens on the island who need it,” he said.
The $400 was donated to the American Legion for its Fourth of July fireworks fund and $400 was donated to the Benjamin family to help defray its expenses while Benji recovers from his fall.
Stornello said one of the members is very active in the American Legion and asked if they could give to the fund-raising drive that is taking place for the event.
“We decided to do it,” he said, adding that they have contributed to the fund for the past two or three years.
Stornello said since the Benjamin family does an awful lot for the community, the Mariners decided to give in its time of need.
“They do an awful lot for everyone else and they certainly need help from the community,” he said.
The Matlacha Mariners meet once a month on the first Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at the Matlacha Community Center. Stornello said anyone interested in joining are certainly welcome to watch the meeting and or sign up to become a member.
