Jason Bonham to play two free concerts in April at the SJCCA

Jason Bonham said Pine Island means a great deal to him and credits the island with the reason he gets to play music. A third generation electrician, Bonham said he came here on vacation nine years ago, and never left.

“I didn’t go home and I’ve been playing music the whole time, ever since. It’s because of Pine Island that it’s possible. I traded in my tool-pouch for a guitar and I never looked back,” Bonham said.

On April 2 and also on April 23, his band will be playing for the community, free of charge, from 2-5 p.m., at the St. James City Civic Association.

Special guests will be brought in for the April 2, such as Mickey Basil, who has played with the likes of Randy Travis and Dolly Parton. Also in attendance, said Bonham, will be Chris Moon.

“Chris is the man who discovered Prince and put him on the map. He has sold over 22 million records, and he is going to be available for a meet and greet,” Bonham said.

Bonham’s wife, Andrea, will also take the stage with her husband, he said, as many love to hear her sing.

Although the band will happily accept tips, Bonham didn’t want the community to be hampered by charging a fee to come and enjoy this event. The hope, for Bonham, is that this will become an annual tradition.

“I feel like people start leaving around April, so we wanted the opportunity to get two community events, and next year I could see them growing into more, where we would have more vendors, and more activities. We want to give the community a great day of music and food, and I want to build something that will grow,” Bonham said.

Low Key Tiki will provide food, and Bonham asks that those who’d like to come bring their own coolers, chairs or golf carts.
