The Greater Pine Island VFW Post #4353 held a special “tasting” event where wine was the guest of honor, with cheese as its favorite companion, on Friday, Jan. 21.  Member  Gary Lufriu welcomed 28 tasters and introduced them to the exciting new wine selections at the “V” Wine Club.

Mary Wilcox, who is currently a  consultant for the dairy and food industry, shared her experiences with cheese making, a little bit about the history of wine and cheese making, and presented cheese, fruit and nut pairings for participants to enjoy with the wine selections.

All the cheeses tasted are available at the Pine Island Winn-Dixie, which helped co-sponsor the event.

A second event is planned for Friday, Feb. 18,  from 4:30-6 p.m., for $15 per person.  Please sign-up now at the VFW to reserve a spot as walk-in availability will be limited.

Numerous tasters enjoyed all the offerings and the VFW is hoping to grow this monthly event — something different for the island that helps the VFW stand out and extend its involvement with the Pine Island community.
