Friends of the Pine Island Library bylaws revised by unanimous vote

2 min read

Members of the Friends of the Pine Island Library voted unanimously to approve a major revision to their bylaws at the Jan. 20 meeting. Since its founding in 1990, the Friends have elected officers to manage the “business” part of operating a nonprofit organization. Changing demographics exacerbated by the global pandemic strained organizations across the country, and the Friends of Pine Island Library was no different. The local leadership set out to develop a new strategy.

After months of research and interviewing other nonprofits, a special committee established by the board made its proposal. The intent in the bylaws revision was to outline a robust board that promotes membership involvement through active committees. The recommendation was to elect a larger board of directors which would then select its own officers. This is the same format successfully used by F.I.S.H. and the Calusa Land Trust. These recommendations were discussed in detail at the Nov. 18 membership meeting.

Adapting to a new COVID climate, Friends held its January meeting using a progressive voting strategy. Friends could vote in person at the library; virtually through Zoom; or by drive-up in the library parking lot. A total of 30 Friends voted; 14 in person, 12 virtually, and 4 at the drive-up. The proposal passed unanimously.

Friends are encouraged to vote on a full slate of director candidates at the Feb. 17 membership meeting.
