Annual Holiday House raises funds for Beacon of Hope
The Tarpon Lodge saw an influx of approximately 800 people at the Beacon of Hope Holiday House three-day annual fundraising event, according to long-time board member, Elsie Stearns. Some attendees came from as far away as Tampa, said Stearns, adding that the weather and sunset backdrop completed each day perfectly. The holiday tree raffle broke records in donations, she said, with the tabletop trees bringing in just over $19,000.
“Some people told me it’s their favorite day of the year, when they come with their family,” Stearns said.
As people were shopping and bidding on items, a violinist played for entertainment. There was an array of appetizers, and drinks were also made available. Sunday was designated family day, where a DJ entertained with music and the families were led in dancing, games, face painting, and crafts. Santa and Mrs. Claus, who attended every day of the event, arrived via fire truck, and engaged the families in an effort to create a fun, family friendly setting, along with the Matlacha Hookers, vendors, staff, and of course the Beacon board members.
“Scarlet Brittan did the face painting and then contributed her donations to the Beacon, which was very sweet. Former girl scout, Jessica Green Skourupski, who was a vendor, remembers going to the bank and seeing Santa when she was young. She said the event brought back memories of her own childhood. It is the biggest fundraising event of the year for the Beacon of Hope,” Stearns said.
Rob Wells III and the whole Wells family welcome the Beacon to come in and take over the property each year, said Stearns, who also said that although the event is a fundraiser, for many it seems to kick off the holiday season. Holiday House has now become a tradition for many and she said she foresees it withholding for years to come.
“I am very touched and humbled by the people that continue to show up and support this event each year,” Stearns said.
