The American Legion Auxiliary held a yard sale Sunday, Dec. 12, at the American Legion Post. VA and R (veteran’s affairs and rehabilitation) Chair Kristin Petty-Brinkle said her project is always the homeless veterans.

“I did a yard sale in June and it went so well I did another one. What I did was rented spaces out for people to use and the money from the spaces goes towards one of the homeless veterans charities I choose,” Petty said.

Petty took on two projects simultaneously, she said, the other was collecting toiletries for the veterans. Since both projects were in the works, it made sense to do them on the same day.

Another collection of toiletries was sent over from the Legion Auxiliary to the troops in the fall. The yard sale, she said, raised $400, which will go to Holidays for Heroes, the organization to be partnered for the sake of homeless veterans.

Back in June, Petty said the organization, which received the proceeds, “Hearts and Homes,” informed her that they are finished collecting donations for the year.

“The yard sale went very well. This is our second one, and everyone seems to like it. They look forward to my doing it a lot now,” Petty said.

There will be a meeting, said Petty, to determine the date of the next yard sale, which may be before the end of this season.

“I want to thank everyone greatly for continuing to support all my activities and events. I put everything out there and everyone is so gracious and so kind. They just come together — we are an island family, that’s what we are. I always say we are a family, even at the American Legion. We are doing what we do to help the veterans,” Petty said.
