North Fort Myers, Pine Island and Matlacha move to single-day for garbage, recycling and yard waste collections

As of Monday, Nov. 1, residents of North Fort Myers, Pine Island and Matlacha only have to take their trash, recycling and yard waste to the curb once a week.
Waste Pro, Lee County’s contracted hauler for the area, announced the service enhancement through postcards delivered to each of the 23,000 service addresses listing the new service day for each address. Residents with questions can call Waste Pro customer service at 239-337-0800.
Residents also can use the search feature on the Lee County Solid Waste website to determine their new collection day at www.leegov.com/solidwaste. Posters have been distributed to libraries, recreation centers and businesses. Additionally, the county will use a billboard in North Fort Myers and a temporary digital sign in the greater Pine Island area to inform residents. Residents can also follow Lee County Government on social media for information about the changes.
“We continually look for ways to improve residents’ experiences,” said Doug Whitehead, Lee County Solid Waste director. “Same-day service minimizes the time residents have material sitting curbside and reduces collection vehicle traffic in neighborhoods to one day per week.”
Same-day service previously has been introduced as a service enhancement in Lehigh Aces and is planned to expand throughout the county. The same-day service uses multiple trucks (trash, yard waste and recycling) to complete collections. Crews will also be on the lookout for addresses still making the transition to same-day collection.
