Licensed massage therapist brings her best to Pine Island

Alston Kunzelmann is a newlywed who’s also new to Pine Island, however massage therapy, she said, is nothing new, and in fact, for her a very intuitive practice.
Like many people in the industry, Kunzelmann said she knew right away performing therapeutic bodywork to make people better was a great fit. Relocating from her thriving career in Napa, California, wasn’t a move she ever saw in the cards for her, however, after reconnecting with her now husband, the move seemed inevitable.
Kunzelmann will be at Christine Karow Hair and Massage Salon Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, but is available extensively, as her business is mobile.
“My focus is working with women to promote self-care in all areas of their life, not just through massage,” Kunzelmann said.
Self-care in general is something many women resist, feeling that it’s simply selfish, she said. It’s her mission to teach women that self-care doesn’t mean me first, it means me, too, as Kunzelmann wants women to include themselves on their own list of priorities.
Deep tissue massage, she said, begins with introducing herself to a client’s muscles until she can feel where they most need attention.
“It starts very slowly with energy, and then we connect. Gradually we get into deep tissue work, and often where the stress and tension is being felt, is reflexive, meaning it’s coming from a completely different area on the body,” Kunzelmann said.
Every client is unique, and therefore has different needs, said Kunzelmann, explaining that her bodywork changes based on suiting a particular client. Connecting with people in this holistic way, she said, gives her more passion and energy to help as many people as possible.
“I never say, ‘I have to go to work today.’ I find myself saying I get to go to work today. It feeds me just as much as it feeds a client. When I’m focused on and connected with a client, I lose track of space and time in a spiritual exchange,” Kunzelmann said.
Kunzelmann wants islanders to know that she absolutely loves what she does and she’s not just here to do a job, but to get to know her clients and to serve them in a deep energetic level.
“This is much more than moving my hands over someone for an hour. Our relationship will grow as I get to know someone’s body, and it will get better and better,” Kunzelmann said.
