Wreaths Across America program now under way

Wreaths will be placed on veterans’ graves at Coral Ridge Cemetery

2 min read

The tradition of laying wreaths to honor veterans during the holiday season began in 1992, when the Worcester Wreath Company was stuck with a number of extra wreaths at the close of the holiday season.

Morrill Worcester, remembering a boyhood trip to sacred grounds of Arlington National Cemetery, donated 5,000 wreaths to be placed at the headstones of an older section of the cemetery.

What began as one man’s gesture has now grown into a national movement when in 2006 Wreaths Across America was formed as a non-profit.

This year is the fifth year that the Wreaths Across America will be held in conjunction with Coral Ridge Cemetery.

Last year only 856 wreaths were placed in a cemetery of over 3,000 veterans. Each wreath costs $15 and it only will take a moment to either write a check or go online to make a purchase.

Make a check out to Wreaths Across America and mail it to P.O. Box 325, St. James City, FL, 33956, or go online to wreathsacrossamerica.org/FL0516. The deadline for checks is Nov. 15, however if you go online you may purchase wreaths until Nov. 26.

This year the wreaths will be placed at the cemetery on Saturday, Dec. 18, all are welcome to attend this ceremony.
