Island shared-use path extension open to the public

2 min read

Lee County opened the southernmost segment of the Stringfellow Shared Use Path in St. James City on Pine Island.

The new segment follows Stringfellow Road/Oleander Street from York Road to Eighth Avenue and provides connectivity for bicyclists and pedestrians to adjacent facilities on Pine Island.

The shared use path is 10-feet wide in most areas, allowing ample space for pedestrians and bicyclists to travel separated from the roadway.

Crews also installed a new stormwater drainage collection pipe on the east side of the roadway and relocated utilities as a part of the project.

“Lee County prioritizes infrastructure projects both large and small that make a difference in the lives of residents and visitors,” Department of Transportation Director Randy Cerchie said. “We’re glad to have extended the path to add a connection to the existing path north.”

This $1 million project was nominated by the Bicycle/Pedestrian Advisory Committee and paid through funding from road impact fees and gas tax.

The path is for non-motorized vehicles only; golf carts are not permitted on the path. In this area of Stringfellow Road, county ordinance permits golf carts on the roadway between dawn and dusk.
