From the Firehouse: Fire Prevention Week 2021

Fire Prevention Week was created by the National Fire Protection Association in 1922 in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire in 1871. The National Fire Protection Association has reported an average of 358,000 house fires that occur yearly in the United States. The goal of Fire Prevention Week is to educate families, students, and our community by raising fire safety awareness. In order to raise fire safety awareness, the Matlacha/Pine Island Fire Control District has educated the students of Pine Island Elementary and Creative Coast Preschool by explaining the importance of escape planning, stop drop and roll, and identifying items that can cause potential fires. This year we educated the students at Pine Island Elementary virtually with great success.
The district is also holding a Free Pumpkin Patch event at Station One at 5700 Pine Island Road on Oct. 23 from 9 to 11 a.m. We will also have a great photo opportunity for all with a fall-themed photo-op station.
