Florida peach cultivation presentation at Pine Island Garden Club Oct. 21
This Thursday, Oct. 21, the Pine Island Garden Club, at its monthly meeting beginning at 9 a.m. at the Fishers of Men Lutheran Church, will host Dr. Mongi Zekri, who is the citrus agent at the Hendry County Extension Office of the University of Florida. He will discuss the aspects of a new hybrid peach variety designed to spring-ripen for market prior to harvests in competing states.
Prior to the presentation, a breakfast buffet and beverages (bring your own cup/glass) will be served.
Founded in 1975, the Pine Island Garden Club’s mission includes the protection and conservation of natural resources, encouraging island beauty and stimulating the study of the fine art of gardening. Its civic duties include the creation and maintenance of the grounds at Phillips Park, Museum of the Islands, Beacon of Hope, Bokeelia Post Office and Pine Island Elementary School.
It also provides financial support to several island benevolent organizations, such as the Beacon of Hope, Calusa Land Trust, CROW, Kiwanis Children’s Park, Pine Island Elementary School and Pine Island Food Pantry.
