Firefighters present program for students for Fire Prevention Week

Students at Pine Island Elementary School received a presentation from the Matlacha/Pine Island Fire Control District during Fire Prevention Week on Oct. 6.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, firemen were unable to visit the PIE campus, but all classes attended a Zoom virtual session with members of the department.
Capt. Cliff Simer was joined by Inspector Courtney Urich and Firefighters Zach Robertson and Hunter O’Leary in explaining a wide-ranging series of techniques on fire safety. These included Stop Drop and Roll, home escape routes, and a Q&A on how to recognize various fire dangers.
In addition, firefighters demonstrated how they don their gear and operate various pieces of equipment.
As an added bonus, M/PIFCD sent “goodie bags” to each student. These included water bottles, coloring books and other items to remind students about fire safety.
