Lee Health plans medical facility in Cape off Pine Island Road

Lee Health has purchased land in Cape Coral for a future medical facility.
“Lee Health’s Board of Directors approved the purchase of a 22.7 acre parcel of land off Pine Island Road at their Aug. 26 meeting,” said Ben Spence, Chief Financial and Business Services Officer at Lee Health, in response to emailed questions from The Cape Coral Breeze. “It is too early to announce definitive plans for the land, but at this time we anticipate building a facility similar to Lee Health Coconut Point, with a combination of physician offices, diagnostic testing, and other health care services.
“Our Coconut Point location has transformed the delivery of health services for residents of South Lee County, and we project that this location will do the same for Cape Coral. Currently, Lee Health Coconut Point is meeting 90+% of the healthcare needs in the Estero-Bonita Springs area, which is also our goal for the Pine Island (Road) location. We will provide more details as we finalize plans to expand access to health care services in Cape Coral.”
According to the Lee Health website, “Lee Health Coconut Point has everything you need under one roof: 24/7 emergency care, primary care, specialists, outpatient surgery, imaging, pediatrics, a pharmacy, and women’s care. We also have a cafe, comfortable social spaces, and technology to help you navigate the facility.”
The Estero facility is at 23450 Via Coconut Point.
Cape Coral City Councilmember Dan Sheppard made the announcement that Lee Health had purchased land in the city for a new facility at Wednesday’s Council meeting.
Sheppard said the Pine Island Road site is near the Sandoval development.
Sheppard has been calling for a second hospital and has approached Lee Health regarding the possibility of building a new facility in Cape Coral multiple times.
“I’ve been working on this since before I joined Council. I was coming to the podium, expressing the importance of the expansion,” Sheppard said. “Cape Coral Hospital has become overcrowded and the emergency room has been overwhelmed for many years because of our rapid growth.”
Sheppard said a facility similar to the one in Estero would be a welcome addition to Lee Health’s offerings in the city.
“Lee Health is an important part of our city,” Sheppard said. “The largest employers of our city are Lee Health and the city. I’m very happy with the relationship that we have, that they’re investing more money in us, and it’s going to have a big impact on the financial demographic of the city. It’s going to bring a lot of prosperity.”
