COVID-19 Task Force supports vaccination pop-up clinic

The Community Cooperative Mobile Food Pantry, which makes a food delivery to Pine Island United Methodist Church the third Friday of each month, will make free vaccines available Friday, Sept. 17, from 10 a.m. until noon, Pastor Kaylee Vida said at the Sept. 7 meeting of the Pine Island COVID-19 Task Force.
The Task Force urges islanders who have not received a vaccination to take advantage of the free vaccinations offered at PIUMC.
According to Vida, although the group that will distribute the vaccines has not been disclosed, the specific vaccines will be Moderna or Johnson & Johnson.
Task Force member Helen Fox expressed concern that elderly islanders who still wish to be vaccinated may not have had access to a ride.
According to Dr. James Koopman, another Task Force member, current COVID conditions with the Delta variant are indicative of its rapid transmission.
“It rises to the point where it exceeds the critical level to maintain transmission, so when it starts going down it’s already at a very low level and it keeps going down fast, which is quite different from a lot of other endemic corona viruses,” he said.
He went onto say that we all can expect to see this virus stay with us.
The Pine Island COVID-19 Task Force meets weekly to discuss issues with the ongoing pandemic and strives to keep islanders informed about the serious disease.
Pine Island United Methodist Church is located at 5701 Pine Island Road, Bokeelia.
