Winn-Dixie helping Pine Island Elementary

Pine Island Winn-Dixie Manager Dan Loughren has announced that the grocery store chain’s corporate office has integrated a program asking customers if they’d like to round up their bill total to the nearest dollar, or to donate an additional dollar or $5 designated to benefit the school of their choice.
“All the proceeds go to Pine Island Elementary School, which is really cool,” said Loughren. “It’s the first time we’ve ever done this.”
The program began Wednesday, July 28, and will go until Tuesday, Aug. 10. Loughren said each store has the option of choosing the school to which it’ll donate. The choice was a pretty easy one for Loughren, he said, as there is only one school on the island.
In addition he said, it’s always a great feeling to be able to give back to the community.
“I hope we collect a lot,” said Loughren. “I made some home-made signage to put in front of the registers, and for the windows to draw some attention. I’m going to do some PA announcements, too, to get as much as we can for them, because I know they’ll put it to good use — for school supplies, for kids that might not be able to afford it.”
